SPIEL Essen 2026: Record Fair with Eight Halls and 230,000 Visitors

From 22 to 25 October 2026, Essen will once again transform into the world capital of board games. SPIEL Essen, organized by Friedhelm Merz Verlag, will break several of its own records this year – and sets additional accents with new formats such as a laser tag event and a B2B matchmaking tool for industry and audience alike.

Using all eight halls for the first time

With the addition of Hall 8, SPIEL Essen is using the complete exhibition grounds for the first time in its history. This results in a total area of 81,200 square meters – a new area record for the world's largest public trade fair for board games. According to the PR department of Merz Verlag, this means "game fun, new releases and creativity" on an unprecedented scale.

The organizers are also expecting a new attendance record: Up to 230,000 visitors are expected to be admitted over the four fair days. The fact that this goal is realistic is shown by advance sales: As early as 20 August, Merz Verlag reported that around half of the total contingent for the central event days was sold out.

Over 900 exhibitors and around 1,500 new releases

The international reach of the fair is evident in the exhibitor numbers: Over 900 exhibitors from more than 50 countries present around 1,500 new releases in Essen – from board and card games to dice and strategy games, as well as family, children's and role-playing games, plus miniature worlds. The special aspect of the SPIEL Essen concept: Visitors don't just watch, they actively play. At almost every stand, trained instructors are ready to make new releases directly experiential, while authors sign their games and engage with fans.

Two awards traditionally form the highlights of the fair: The German Game Award is considered the most prestigious board game award in the country, while the innoSPIEL Innovation Award specifically honors the most innovative tabletop concepts of the year.

New formats: Laser tag, B2B matchmaking and city program

For 2026, SPIEL Essen has come up with some innovations. Together with Games Workshop, the fair brings "Kill Team LIVE!" – a Warhammer laser tag experience – to the grounds for the first time, a premiere that combines classic tabletop fans with an action-packed live format. For the trade visitor side of the industry, a new B2B matchmaking tool is now available to facilitate targeted business contacts between industry professionals.

The fair is also expanding beyond the halls: With the new partnership program "Essen plays!" – a cooperation between Messe Essen, the City of Essen and Merz Verlag – the SPIEL feeling is being deliberately brought to the entire city for the first time. Ticket holders benefit from additional advantages in and around Essen. The program is complemented by the traditional Educators Day, which takes place on Friday, is free of charge and included in the ticket price, and is specifically aimed at teachers and education enthusiasts.

As the official face of the fair in 2026, American illustrator and artist Peter Mohrbacher serves as ambassador and appears in, among other things, a dedicated SPIEL Essen podcast. There, news about the fair is regularly discussed – an additional communication channel that emphasizes the growing media presence of the event.

Tickets and prices

The official ticket shop opened on 22 July 2026 at 10 am – advance sales through vouchers or third-party providers were expressly not possible. The price structure shows the range of target groups: Children aged 4 to 12 pay 16 euros (Early Bird 15 euros), discounted tickets for students, pupils, severely disabled people from degree 50 onwards and people on social service or in cosplay cost 22 euros (Early Bird 21 euros). The family ticket for two adults and up to three children is 67 euros (Early Bird 65 euros). Trade visitors from the board game industry can purchase a special ticket for 46 euros.

Conclusion and outlook

SPIEL Essen 2026 marks a further milestone in the history of the fair with the first-time use of all eight halls and the expected visitor record. Through new formats such as the laser tag experience, the B2B matchmaking tool and the city-wide partnership program "Essen plays!", the event positions itself not only as a pure sales fair, but as a comprehensive experiential format for industry, families and pop culture fans alike. Given the strong ticket demand already, the Ruhr metropolis is likely to be the undisputed center of the international gaming world for four days in 2026 as well.
