Messe Frankfurt is making headlines on two fronts: On the one hand, it wants to apply as the operator of the planned multifunctional arena at Waldstadion, and on the other hand, the global player is advancing its international expansion with numerous new event formats. Both developments demonstrate how the Frankfurt trade fair venue is strategically positioning itself for the future.

Application for the Multifunctional Arena at Waldstadion

According to the FAZ, Messe Frankfurt intends to apply as the operator of the planned multifunctional arena at Waldstadion. The company does not fear competition with its own Festhalle – quite the opposite: both locations should complement each other in the future and cover different event formats.

The political groundwork for the major project was already laid last year. Frankfurt's city council voted on February 27, 2025, in favor of building the multifunctional arena. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026. Currently, conceptual, technical, and functional preparations are underway: the goal is to create a reliable decision-making basis for further planning steps. The corresponding services are scheduled to be awarded in July 2026.

Complementary Rather Than Competitive with the Festhalle

For Messe Frankfurt, this engagement offers the opportunity to strategically expand its portfolio of event spaces. The new arena could in the future accommodate formats that cannot be realized in the traditional Festhalle due to capacity or concept limitations – such as larger sports and entertainment events. In this way, the Frankfurt trade fair venue positions itself as a multifunctional venue with a broad spectrum of use possibilities.

International Expansion Strategy Accelerates

In parallel with its commitment in Frankfurt, Messe Frankfurt is consistently advancing its global growth strategy. With the Intelligent Building Expo 2026, the company is organizing a technical trade fair in Uzbekistan for the first time. The new event will take place from May 20-22, 2026, in Tashkent and covers areas such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water supply, lighting, building automation, and security and IT security technology.

New Locations for Established Brands

Messe Frankfurt is also expanding in the automotive sector with three new events. The internationally leading trade fair brand Automechanika will now also be held in Jakarta and Baku. Additionally, the company is investing in a new Festival of Motoring: this popular motorsports event has been held annually since 2016 at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Johannesburg and will additionally be offered in Sydney, Australia, from 2026 onwards.

In the entertainment sector, Messe Frankfurt is also cooperating with VNU Exhibitions Asia Pacific to tap the Southeast Asian entertainment market with Prolight + Sound Bangkok 2026. The regions of Saudi Arabia and India are also coming into stronger focus: with a new subsidiary, Messe Frankfurt is advancing its regional expansion in Saudi Arabia, while its long-term engagement in India continues to be expanded.

Successful Lead Trade Fairs as Foundation

The success of Frankfurt's lead trade fairs demonstrates that the international growth strategy is built on solid ground. The Light + Building 2026, which took place from March 8-13 in Frankfurt, recorded 1,927 exhibitors from 49 countries. According to Messe Frankfurt, the trade fair highlighted the rapid pace of innovation in the industry – from the electrification and digital networking of buildings and urban spaces to sophisticated lighting and design concepts for architecture, urban development, and interior design. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, bidirectional charging, multifunctional interfaces, and networked lighting solutions characterized numerous new products and marked the next stage of development for buildings, cities, and lighting design.

Conclusion and Outlook

Messe Frankfurt demonstrates growth orientation in multiple ways: by applying to operate the multifunctional arena at Waldstadion, the company secures an additional presence in the local events market without jeopardizing the established Festhalle. At the same time, international expansion – from Uzbekistan through Saudi Arabia and India to Australia and Southeast Asia – is advancing the global positioning of the trade fair organizer. Whether the application for the Waldstadion arena will be successful will become clear with the awarding of planning services scheduled for July 2026. What is already certain: Messe Frankfurt is consistently pursuing growth and diversification of its event portfolio both regionally and internationally.
