From 1 to 4 February 2026, Cologne once again transformed into the world capital of confectionery and snacks. But ISM is long since more than just a trade fair – it is increasingly positioning itself as an umbrella brand under which ProSweets Cologne, ISM Ingredients and international offshoots such as ISM Japan are bundled. This strategic reorientation shows how seriously Kölnmesse takes industry change.

From Individual Trade Fair to Strong Umbrella Brand

This year's edition made clear that ISM is consistently expanding its role as a central business platform for the confectionery and snacking industry. Leading international retail chains visited the fair, exhibitors and trade visitors from 71 countries were already confirmed for 2026. Particularly remarkable is the development of the still young ISM Ingredients sector: With 87 exhibitors, the segment recorded a near-tripling compared to previous exhibitor numbers, according to the organizers. With this, ISM underscores that it no longer only represents end products but maps the entire value chain of the industry – from raw materials and ingredients to the finished snack on the shelf.

New Formats and More "Eventization"

At fair level, ISM 2026 relied on a mix of proven and new formats. Lab5, the New Product Showcase and Talks & Tastings complemented the classic exhibition concept and created additional platforms for innovations and professional exchange. Industry awards also rounded out the program and honored outstanding product developments.

Gismo Remains Brand Ambassador

A familiar face was not missing in 2026 either: Mascot Gismo walked through the halls again and, as in previous years, created long queues at the popular claw machine "Get Your Gismo" on the Boulevard. As a strong brand ambassador, the figure contributes significantly to the reach of the fair on social media – an example of how Kölnmesse increasingly combines trade fairs with experience elements.

This strategy, which organizers themselves call "eventization," was also evident in the supporting program: Instead of the traditional ISM Dinner for invited guests, the ISM Opening Night took place for the first time on the trade fair Sunday in the Confex building – with live band, more relaxed lounge areas and a noticeably more casual, more familiar character. On ISM Tuesday, a DJ at the "Get Together" in Hall 10.1 also created atmosphere, while beer and drinks provided refreshments for trade visitors.

Industry Challenges: Cocoa Prices and Functional Sweets

Behind the eventization lies an industry currently battling considerable headwinds. High cocoa prices, rising electricity costs, increasing bureaucracy, disrupted world trade and thrifty consumers shape the market environment. At the same time, consumer expectations are changing fundamentally: confectionery should today contribute to a healthy lifestyle. High in protein, low in sugar or ideally sugar-free – and with full flavor – are the keywords, supplemented by nutrients and vitamins. This development towards so-called Functional Sweets represented one of the central themes at ISM 2026 and required exhibitors to find creative, economically viable solutions.

International Reach and Niche Products

The international orientation of ISM was also evident in the diversity of products presented. In addition to classics such as pralines, chocolate and waffles – which were particularly well represented in the Flanders area – exhibitors also presented unusual snack innovations for niche target groups. The range extended from regional specialties to international crossover products, which further solidified ISM's role as a global trend barometer. That the fair has long had significance beyond Europe is underscored by the existence of an independent ISM offshoot in Japan.

Conclusion and Outlook

ISM 2026 impressively confirmed that the Cologne traditional trade fair has successfully developed into an umbrella brand for the entire confectionery and snacking industry. With the growth of ISM Ingredients, new event formats and a clear response to social trends such as Functional Sweets, the event positions itself as an indispensable platform for retail and industry. The fact that the following 2027 edition already has 5 percent more registrations according to initial figures speaks for the industry's continued confidence in the concept. Given the ongoing economic challenges, ISM is likely to continue to serve as an important catalyst for innovation – both in the product sector and for the further development of the trade fair format itself.
