InnoTrans 2026: Record Fair Focuses on AI and Robotics

<p>InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin once again demonstrated that the railway industry is undergoing major transformation. From September 22 to 25, the 15th edition of the leading trade fair for transport technology showcased more exhibitors than ever before – and the innovations ranged from artificial intelligence to autonomous vehicles to new night train concepts. A preliminary assessment shows: automation is no longer a vision of the future, but an established practice.</p>

<h2>Record Numbers of Exhibitors and World Premieres</h2> <p>With <strong>2,940 exhibitors from 59 countries</strong>, InnoTrans 2026 broke all previous records and confirmed its position as the world's largest trade fair for transport technology. The World Innovation Guide documented <strong>180 world premieres</strong> across all five trade fair segments – from Railway Technology to Railway Infrastructure, Public Transport and Interiors to Tunnel Construction. The sheer range spans from AI-powered robots to hybrid locomotives with hydrogen propulsion.</p>

<h2>Vehicles with Alternative Propulsion Systems in Focus</h2> <p>A total of <strong>113 vehicles from 17 countries</strong> were on display at the Berlin fairground – an international showcase on rails. Slovak freight car manufacturer TATRAVAGÓNKA showed the most vehicles with eight models, followed by Swiss manufacturer Stadler Rail with seven exhibits, including a narrow-gauge railway with hydrogen propulsion and a battery-powered regional train. Siemens Mobility and Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) also presented vehicles with alternative propulsion technologies.</p> <p>Chinese exhibitor CRRC unveiled for the first time its hydrogen fuel cell hybrid locomotive with <strong>2,000 kW</strong> power output, while French industry leader Alstom presented two Traxx locomotives with innovative on-board signaling technology. On the subject of speed, Hitachi with the ETR1000 Frecciarossa and Hyundai Rotem with the EMU 320 set benchmarks – both high-speed trains reach maximum speeds of over 300 km/h.</p>

<h2>Autonomy and Artificial Intelligence as Leading Topics</h2> <p>Autonomous systems in public transport are increasingly becoming the focus of the industry. Railevo presented the world's first autonomous rail taxi, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane unveiled an unmanned vehicle, and TH Ostwestfalen-Lippe showcased Monocab, an autonomous monorail vehicle specifically designed for rural areas. Belgian exhibitor Otiv took it a step further by demonstrating remote control of a train in the Netherlands.</p> <p>InnoTrans has accommodated the digitalization trend since 2024 with a dedicated exhibition area: in 2026 as well, the AI Mobility Lab in Hall 7.1a in the Public Transport segment was extremely popular. Companies offering AI-based mobility solutions, cybersecurity and data protection solutions, as well as robotics applications received their own platform here. The AI Mobility Corner hosted specialist lectures, while thematic AI Tours guided industry visitors directly to relevant exhibitors. The program was rounded out by the InnoTrans Hackathon – AI on Track, where developers worked together with startups and industry leaders to create practical AI solutions for current challenges in the mobility sector.</p>

<h2>Night Trains Make a Comeback</h2> <p>The night train travel segment experienced a surprising comeback. Luna Rail GmbH presented two-story seating and sleeping areas as well as private cabins for one or two persons in the Luna Rail Lab. Tricon AG presented together with partners such as the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, satek, the German Aerospace Center and GETA interiors the ALISA project – a differentiated offer, lightweight and innovative sleeping car concept, whose mockups were displayed in a tent at the South entrance.</p> <p>"The fact that several new night train concepts are on display at InnoTrans shows how dynamically this segment is currently developing," commented Kerstin Schulz on this development.</p>

<h2>Service, Cleaning and Networking</h2> <p>Beyond technology, InnoTrans 2026 also set accents for the travel experience. With the Mobility Cleaning Circle, the fair brought together the cleaning and mobility industries on September 23, 2026. The special exhibition area Travel Catering & Comfort Services focused on galley kitchens, dining cars and care products, accompanied by the Hospitality Forum of the International Rail Catering Group. Networked thinking was also promoted by the Mobility+ exhibition area, which brought together providers of complementary mobility services in the areas of shared mobility and mobility apps.</p>

<h2>Conclusion and Outlook</h2> <p>With its record numbers and abundance of world premieres, InnoTrans 2026 has once again underscored its role as a global leading trade fair for transport technology. Topics such as artificial intelligence, robotics and automation have long since entered practical application – whether in vehicles, maintenance or the travel experience. Specifically for the Asian market, Messe Berlin will also host InnoTrans Asia at Singapore Expo on September 7-9, 2027, which is intended to further expand the international reach of the brand.
