HANOVER FAIR 2026: Energy Value Chain in Focus

The global energy sector is facing a historic investment wave – and the HANOVER FAIR is positioning itself as a central meeting point for everyone who wants to participate. With a completely new spatial and content concept, the fair will henceforth bring together energy generators, grid operators and large industrial consumers under one roof – and also includes key technologies such as switchgear manufacturing.

Billion-dollar investments drive the energy transition

According to current figures from the International Energy Agency (IEA), global investments in the energy sector are expected to rise to approximately 3.4 trillion US dollars in 2026. Of this, around 2.2 trillion US dollars are to flow specifically into power grids, storage technologies, renewable energies, energy efficiency and electrification. Drivers of this development are the advancing electrification of industry, mobility and heating supply, as well as the growing energy demands of data centers and AI applications.

For manufacturers of energy systems, grid technology, storage solutions and power plant components, this opens up significant business opportunities along the entire energy value chain – from generation through distribution to industrial consumption.

New hall structure from 2027: An ecosystem for energy and industry

To address this demand, Deutsche Messe AG is focusing on a spatial realignment of the fairgrounds. At the center of the concept is a consolidation in the north of the grounds, directly at the North Main Entrance. From 2027 onwards, halls 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 are to form a connected, highly efficient ecosystem that guides visitors with concrete investment and transformation needs directly to suitable solution providers.

"This new concept creates a globally unique synergy effect: for the first time, energy generators and distributors meet in direct proximity to the largest industrial consumers," explains Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Board of Deutsche Messe AG. "This collective shortens decision-making processes, accelerates investments in critical infrastructure, and provides answers to the most pressing questions of the energy transition."

Switchgear manufacturing as a key technology

A concrete example of this thematic integration is switchgear manufacturing. At the HANOVER FAIR 2026, exhibitors present solutions for more efficient and reproducible switchgear production – a technology used in almost every area of the energy value chain: in substations, industrial plants, data centers and in the integration of renewable energies. The modernization of manufacturing processes in switchgear production is considered an important lever to be able to meet the increasing demand for grid technology and electrification solutions. Without efficient, automated production, the ambitious expansion plans for power grids and industrial plants would scarcely be achievable.

Beyond the horizon: E-world and Hyvolution complement the picture

The HANOVER FAIR is not alone in this approach. E-world 2026 also aims to bring together decision-makers, innovators and visionaries from across the energy industry and covers the complete value chain of energy supply. Similarly, Hyvolution addresses the value chains of three closely intertwined target markets: mobility, energy and industry. These parallel developments show: the trend toward comprehensive, cross-industry representation of the energy value chain is not an isolated phenomenon, but a structural response from the trade fair landscape to the challenges of the global energy transition.

Conclusion and outlook

The realignment of the HANOVER FAIR marks a strategic step to respond to the massive investment volumes in the energy sector. By bringing generators, distributors and industrial consumers spatially and thematically closer together in the future, decision-making processes are to be shortened and transformation processes accelerated. Technologies such as modern switchgear manufacturing exemplify how closely production innovation and energy transition are linked. With a view to 2026 and the complete implementation of the new hall concept from 2027, the HANOVER FAIR is likely to further strengthen its position as a central platform for energy and industrial transformation – a signal that is hard to ignore given the predicted trillion-dollar investments.
