Germany is getting a new international leading trade fair for defense and security: From March 9-12, 2027, DSEI Germany will open its doors for the first time at the Hannover exhibition grounds. Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius sees the format as a strategic opportunity to showcase the technological and industrial capabilities of the German defense industry internationally.

A new format for a changed security situation

DSEI Germany is the German branch of the internationally established Defence & Security Equipment International (DSEI) trade fair series and will take place every two years. The premiere will be organized jointly by Deutsche Messe and the global DSEI organizers. On approximately 125,000 square meters of exhibition space, eight specialized sectors will cover the full spectrum of modern multi-domain operations – from land systems to maritime technologies, air and space capabilities, as well as cyber and information security.

For Pistorius, the timing is no coincidence. Against the backdrop of the so-called turning point, the minister emphasizes:

"The turning point requires not only a strategic reorientation of our defense policy, but also targeted promotion of technological and industrial capabilities. With DSEI Germany, Germany can establish an important platform to present its defense industrial capabilities, technological leadership, and innovation capacity on the international stage."

— Boris Pistorius, Federal Defense Minister

Meeting point for industry, military, and politics

The trade fair serves as an interface between European governments, armed forces, and industry. The goal is to support capability development and cooperation within the alliance and strengthen NATO's European pillar. The exhibition is accompanied by a high-profile conference program that brings together military and industrial decision-makers. The program is flanked by a Military Advisory Board of experienced former military leaders who help shape the content direction of conference contributions.

SMEs and start-ups in focus

The organizers place particular emphasis on small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups from Germany. In a specially established Newcomer Zone, young technology companies with defense and security relevance have the opportunity to present themselves to international industry visitors and potential partners. The offering is complemented by the German Association of the Security and Defense Industry (BDSV), which represents the entire range of the industry – from international corporations to highly specialized suppliers. A MeetMe Lounge is also designed to organize structured, pre-arranged business meetings between exhibitors and industry visitors.

International orientation with German focus

Although the focus is clearly on the German market, DSEI Germany is internationally oriented. Among the exhibitors announced so far, alongside German companies such as Wera Werkzeuge, Hellma Materials, or Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft, there are also companies from the Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Turkey. This underscores the organizers' ambition to establish the trade fair as a European platform for capability development and industrial cooperation – not merely as a national showcase.

For the Lower Saxony state capital, the premiere also represents an upgrade as an international trade fair venue in the security-policy sensitive segment. Hannover thus ranks among Europe's cities that compete with specialized defense trade fairs for the attention of governments, armed forces, and industry.

Outlook: What the 2027 premiere must demonstrate

With DSEI Germany, a new format is emerging that reflects the changed security policy framework in Europe. Whether the trade fair can establish itself as a permanent fixture in the international trade fair calendar will be decided at the premiere in March 2027. The decisive factor will likely be whether concrete cooperation between industry, armed forces, and politics can be initiated beyond the mere performance showcase. Given the tight schedule of two years until the next edition, the industry will closely observe the first event – as a barometer of how seriously Germany takes its industrial policy response to the turning point.
